Who wouldn’t want to sleep in a cosy swallow’s nest? Ours isn’t precariously balanced in a treetop though, it’s an eco-friendly, sustainable strawbale lodge with its feet firmly on the ground. It’s also a snug, warm hideaway which everyone loves.
Swallow’s Nest is a truly unique two-person glamping option with a fascinating history. It was the first strawbale building we built here at Rock Farm and it’s made from our own barley straw grown on the farm and local clay. It is plastered with lime and finished in natural clay paints. The green roof is a living blanket of succulent sedum plants.
Walking inside Swallow’s Nest or Lime House (our other strawbale guest accommodation), people don’t realise it’s built from anything other than conventional blocks or wood. Lime House in particular looks just the same as a regular house. The difference is in the carbon footprint, the efficiency in terms of energy and the low construction cost. They are really well insulated and well-built strawbale houses like ours last up to 100 years. Our offices at Rock Farm are also made from strawbale construction.
Swallow’s Nest is bright and inviting and sleeps two people plus a baby cot. The cosy furnishings include a large double bed with uninterrupted views across farmland and the woods beyond. With a veranda, private bathroom and shower facilities it offers privacy away from the main Glamping area allowing you to truly unwind. It has an electric stove for heating and electric lights and sockets as well as tea/coffee making facilities, but no WiFi so you get a real rest from technology if that’s what you’re looking for. Don’t fret though - WiFi can be accessed 24/7 around our reception area.
Swallow’s Nest is open for guest bookings all year round.
Visitors staying in Swallow’s Nest have full access to our campsite facilities including the communal fully equipped kitchen, chill out space, hot showers, clay pizza oven and outdoor wood-burning hot tub (you haven’t lived until you’ve tried this!). There is ample outdoor seating and eating areas, a fire pit and a large green area for fun and games. We also have a natural swimming pool for our guests to use.
